Have questions about our services or how compounding works? We’ve compiled answers to the most common inquiries to help you understand what we do and how we can support your health.
Most compounded medications contain active ingredients that require a doctor's prescription. However, some non-prescription products, such as cosmetic items or certain medicinal formulations, can be purchased directly from our store or by contacting Norwood Compounding Pharmacy.
Compounded medications are prescribed when a patient requires a different dosage, form (e.g., liquid instead of a tablet), or ingredients (such as dye-free or preservative-free versions), or if the medication is not available commercially.
Compounded medications are prepared by trained pharmacists who follow strict guidelines set by the Pharmacy Board of Australia and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). However, these medicines are not TGA-approved like standard pharmaceuticals. At Norwood Compounding, we ensure high standards by conducting quality testing twice a year with PCCA for two different forms of medication. Additionally, every compounded medication undergoes an in-house quality check before being dispensed to the patient.
Insurance coverage varies, and compounded medications may not always be covered. It is best to consult with your private health insurance provider to determine your level of coverage for compounded prescriptions. We can provide an official receipt to help you inquire and file claims with your health fund as needed.
The time it takes can vary depending on the complexity of the compound, but generally, it may take a few hours to a couple of days. It's best to consult our pharmacy for an accurate timeline.
Yes, some medications are not allowed to be compounded, especially those that are commercially available in the needed form and strength, or drugs that are deemed unsafe or unstable for compounding by Australian regulatory bodies.
Yes, if your doctor writes refills on the prescription, you can get them. However, it's important to note that compounded medications have shorter shelf lives than commercially produced ones, so you may need to have them re-prepared more frequently.
The cost of compounded medications varies depending on the formulation, the quantity and quality of active ingredients, and the time required to prepare the individual product. Simple compounds may be less expensive, while more complex formulations that require additional research may cost more. Norwood Compounding ensures that only the highest quality raw materials are used, which contributes to both efficacy and safety for human and animal use. Our team is happy to discuss pricing options tailored to a patient's specific needs.
